Checking in for your Copa flight

Check in early, carry the right documents, and mind the cutoffs — that's most of a smooth Copa departure. Because most Copa trips are international and connect through Panama, a little extra time goes a long way. Here's what to do and when.

    How Copa check-in generally works

General timings. Exact windows depend on the airport and, since most Copa flights are international, on entry requirements too.

    Online and app check-in:

Copa check-in on copa.com and the Copa Airlines app generally opens 24 hours before departure and closes a set time before the flight. It's the easiest way and usually gives the best remaining seats.

    Airport counters and bag drop:

If you're checking a bag or need documents verified, use the counter or bag drop. As an international carrier, Copa's document checks take time — arrive earlier than you would for a short domestic hop.

    Boarding groups close firmly:

Copa boards by groups and closes boarding several minutes before departure. Higher fares, Business and ConnectMiles elite statuss board earlier; being at the gate early matters.

    Documents for international travel:

Passports, visas and entry requirements for your destination — and any transit rules through Panama — are your responsibility and are checked before boarding. Verify them well ahead.

    Connecting through Panama:

If you connect at the Hub of the Americas, know your arrival and departure gates and your minimum connection time. Tocumen is large and busy — don't cut it fine.

Check-in and boarding cutoffs vary by airport, route and aircraft, and international document checks add time. If online check-in won't go through or a document question comes up, call us and we'll help you sort it before you travel. Copa's own tools at copa.com are free.

Before you leave for the airport

A quick pre-flight check that prevents most day-of problems on an international trip.

    • Check in online and save the mobile boarding pass
    • Confirm passport, visa and entry requirements — plus any Panama transit rules
    • Recheck your flight status in case of changes
    • Know your bag drop and boarding cutoffs, and your Panama connection time

If online check-in won't accept you, it's often just an international document check or a ticket condition — usually you simply check in at the airport. Call us and we'll confirm why so there's no surprise at the Copa counter.
