Check in on aircanada.com or the Air Canada app from 24 hours before departure. It is the easiest way to lock a seat, get your boarding pass and see any last changes. Because your carry-on and checked-bag allowance ride on your fare, sorting the fare first makes the whole check-in painless.
This is the Air Canada detail people miss. If your trip connects through Toronto (YYZ), Montreal (YUL), Vancouver (YVR) or Calgary (YYC) on the way to the US, you clear US customs and immigration in Canada, at the Canadian airport, and then arrive in the US as a domestic passenger. It is convenient, but it adds a step, so leave extra time on the connection.
Because preclearance means clearing US border formalities before you board, a connection through a Canadian gateway can take longer than a same-country transfer. Arrive at the airport early, and do not book the tightest possible connection through YYZ, YUL, YVR or YYC when the US is your destination.
Air Canada does not publish its own passport and visa tables. It notes that some countries require a passport valid three to six months beyond your return date, and that many grant entry only if you hold a return or onward ticket. Both are things a border officer, not the check-in desk, will enforce, so confirm them before you fly.
Air Canada points you to the destination's own rules. Visa-exempt travellers flying to Canada need an eTA. US Visa Waiver travellers need ESTA. US and Canadian citizens can use a NEXUS card instead of a passport at the border, and Chinese travellers on a 10-year US visa must keep their EVUS enrollment current. Sort these days ahead, not at the airport.
