How Southwest refunds generally work
Whether you get cash back usually comes down to two things: your fare, and who caused the change.
Refundable tickets return to your original payment; most fares are nonrefundable and instead convert to Southwest flight credit when you cancel by choice.
If Southwest cancels or significantly reschedules your flight, a refund to your original form of payment is generally available — no matter how low the fare was.
Cancel any fare within 24 hours of booking and it's refunded in full to your original payment, under the US Department of Transportation rule.
Outside 24 hours, a nonrefundable cancellation usually becomes Southwest flight credit toward a future trip. Basic is the most restricted fare. Credit carries usage terms.
If your cancellation lands as flight credit rather than cash, that value isn't lost — it can be applied toward a future Southwest booking, subject to its usage terms. We can walk you through how to redeem it so it doesn't go to waste.
Card refunds usually take one or more billing cycles to appear on your statement, while flight credit is typically available for your next trip much sooner. Requesting the right outcome correctly the first time is the fastest path — that's where we help.
Eligibility depends on your fare rules, route and the reason for the refund, and the outcome may be cash or Southwest flight credit. We never quote refund amounts because yours depends on your ticket — an agent confirms what you're owed before anything is filed.
