How Air Canada changes & cancellations generally work

Air Canada states that if you cancel within 24 hours of purchase you get a refund to your original payment method. Notably, on its change-and-cancel page this is not tied to booking a certain number of days before departure, the way some US carriers require. That is the current wording and airlines do change these rules, so confirm your exact ticket on the call, but if you booked today there is very likely a clean way out.
Basic allows neither a change nor a refund, it is the most restricted Economy fare Air Canada sells. Standard lets you change for a change fee but is not refundable. Flex drops the change fee entirely, you pay only any fare difference, but it is still non-refundable. Comfort and Latitude are the refundable fares with changes included. Know your brand before you decide anything.
Even on a fare that allows changes, moving to a busier flight or date usually means paying the difference between what you paid and today's price, on top of any change fee. Sometimes the new flight is cheaper and there is no difference to pay. An agent prices the exact move before you commit.
Comfort and Latitude include same-day standby. Basic never does. For Standard and Flex, Air Canada's fare table says standby is free on select routes, but it never publishes which routes and a footnote lists only Latitude and Comfort, so treat Standard and Flex standby as uncertain and route-limited. We confirm on the call rather than promise you something the airline itself is vague about.
If you simply don't fly and don't cancel first, the value is generally lost, and on Basic there is nothing to salvage. If plans change, act inside your fare's window rather than skipping the flight. Even a non-refundable fare is worth more handled than abandoned.
Air Canada tickets are generally not transferable to another person. Fixing a typo (a name correction) is a different thing from putting the ticket in someone else's name (a name change), which is not allowed. Spot an error early and tell us, because the options only narrow as departure nears.
