BargainAirTicket is an independent travel agency, we are not Volaris and are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by Volaris. What you're owed after a disruption depends on the cause, your route and which rules apply, and airlines change these terms; always confirm current entitlements at volaris.com, where you can manage the rebooking yourself at no cost. If you'd rather we work the problem with you, our agents help for a service fee, quoted before you're charged.

Delayed or cancelled on Volaris? The line is drawn at 4 hours.

Volaris writes its own disruption promises down, and the document has a hinge: 4 hours. Under it, the policy's lighter obligations. Over it, or on a cancellation, a package that includes meals, a hotel when you're stranded overnight, and an e-voucher worth at least a quarter of what you paid for the segment. Around that sit a US Customer Service Plan for US routes, a Mexican-law layer we'll be honest about, and the one thing no policy document mentions: on a point-to-point low-cost network, the next flight may be tomorrow.

First question: is your delay under 4 hours, or over it (or the flight is cancelled outright)?

    Under 4 hours

You're in the lighter band of Volaris's own compensation policy. Watch the clock, because your entitlements change the moment the delay crosses the line, and gate estimates have a way of growing.

    Over 4 hours, or cancelled

The full package applies under the policy: rebooking, phone and email access, meals, hotel and ground transport if you're stuck overnight, and the e-voucher of at least 25% of the segment price.

Past 4 hours or cancelled: rebooking, meals, free phone and email access under Volaris's own policy Stranded overnight: hotel and ground transport under the same policy The 25% e-voucher expires: redeem within 90 days, travel within 12 months US routes: decline the alternative after a big change and the fare refund is automatic US DOT does not guarantee hotels or meals, on Volaris or any airline Point-to-point network: a cancelled flight may have no same-day alternative

Volaris's own policy: past 4 hours, an e-voucher of at least 25% of the segment price.

That is the airline's published commitment, not a law, and it comes with two clocks: 90 days to redeem, 12 months to travel. Most passengers never hear about it at the gate, which is exactly why knowing it exists before you queue is worth more than anything an app notification will tell you.
    The first hour, in order
    Minute 1, two channels

Get in the airport queue and get a phone working the same problem. On a network where the next seat may be tomorrow, whoever reaches rebooking inventory first wins.

    Track the 4-hour line

Note the original departure time and keep your own count. Your entitlements under Volaris's policy step up when the delay crosses 4 hours, and your evidence is your timestamps.

    Overnight looming? Say the words

Hotel and ground transport belong to the policy's overnight package. Ask for them by name, calmly and early, while rooms near the airport still exist.

    Before you leave the airport

Ask about the compensation e-voucher, get any promise in writing, and note the date: the 90-day redemption clock starts running against you immediately.

One policy, three legal wrappers: reading Volaris's compensation documents

The section no comparison site will give you, because it requires actually reading all three PDFs.

Look for Volaris's compensation policy and you find not one document but three: a Mexican version dated 2017, a Costa Rican version issued under Vuela Aviación, and an El Salvador version under Vuela El Salvador dated 2021. That is not the airline quietly running old and new rules in parallel. Volaris operates through separate national companies, and each publishes the policy under its own legal identity. We have read them side by side: the substance, the 4-hour line and the package behind it, is the same story in each.

Why should a passenger care? Because knowing the structure inoculates you against two mistakes. The first is panic-Googling mid-delay, landing on the Salvadoran PDF, and assuming it doesn't apply to your Mexican domestic flight. The second is letting anyone tell you the policy you're citing is outdated because the copy you found carries a 2017 date. The commitments below are Volaris's published position across its operation, and when you call us mid-disruption, these documents are what we're holding your case against.

What the policy provides, on each side of the 4-hour line

The airline's own commitments, stated as the airline states them.

Under 4 hours: the lighter band.

Short delays trigger the policy's lighter items rather than the full package. The practical move in this band is defensive: keep timestamps, stay near the gate, and know exactly what unlocks if the delay keeps growing.

Over 4 hours, or a cancellation: the full package.

Rebooking, free phone and email access, and meals, per the policy. If the disruption strands you overnight, hotel accommodation and ground transport are part of the commitment, not a favor to negotiate for.

The e-voucher, and its two clocks.

A compensation e-voucher of no less than 25% of the ticket or segment price attaches to qualifying disruptions. Redeem it within 90 days; travel on it within 12 months. A voucher nobody mentions at the gate and nobody redeems by day 91 costs the airline nothing, so treat claiming it as part of the disruption, not an afterthought.

These are Volaris's own published commitments and the airline can revise them; we check the current text against your specific disruption before advising you.

The US layer: service plan, tarmac plan, and the DOT refund

On routes touching the United States, three more sets of numbers work for you.

    The Customer Service Plan's targets:

Delayed checked bags carry a delivery target of 15 hours after arrival. Complaints get acknowledged within 30 days and answered in full within 60. Neither is glamorous, but both are commitments you can quote back, with dates, when a bag or a complaint disappears into silence.

    The tarmac plan:

At US airports, ground holds are capped at 4 hours, with food and water no later than hour 2. If you're sitting on a taxiway watching the clock approach either mark, write the times down; they matter later.

The DOT refund, when you decline:

Cancelled, or significantly changed, 3 or more hours domestic, 6 or more international? If the alternative offered doesn't work and you decline it, the refund of your ticket price is automatic under US DOT rules. Ticket price only: DOT does not guarantee hotels, meals or compensation for the lost day, and its rules are under active revision, so we confirm the current position before we act on your case.

The Mexican-law layer: what we haven't verified, we won't quote

    A short section, on purpose.

Mexican law adds passenger protections on Mexican routes beyond an airline's own policy. You may have seen percentages and entitlements attributed to it around the internet. We have not yet verified those provisions against the government's own published text, and this site does not repeat numbers we haven't confirmed at the source, because a passenger reciting a wrong figure to a gate agent ends up worse off than one asking an open question.

What we can say safely: if you're disrupted on a Mexican route, protections under Mexican law may apply on top of everything above, and checking what your specific case is owed is part of what we do on the call. The policy Volaris wrote for itself is the floor it chose; it is not automatically the whole of what the law provides.

The part no policy mentions: where's the next seat?

Why a Volaris cancellation is a different animal from a cancellation on a hub carrier.

Every commitment above answers "what do I get while I wait." The question that actually decides your day is "what am I waiting for." A hub-and-spoke carrier that cancels your flight reroutes you through its hub on the next bank, often within hours. A point-to-point low-cost carrier flies you from A to B directly, and when that flight dies on a route with one daily frequency, there is no bank, no hub shuffle, and no partner airline standing behind it. Nothing in Volaris's published policies promises to buy you a seat on another carrier.

This is the honest ULCC bargain: the fare was low partly because the safety net is thin. It is also precisely the moment a phone desk earns its fee. While the gate queue shuffles toward a single overwhelmed agent, we're checking Volaris's own alternates through different cities, same-day seats on other airlines as a new ticket, and whether the smart play is the DOT refund plus a rebuilt routing instead of tomorrow's flight. Sometimes the answer is to take the voucher, the refund and a different airline home. Knowing that menu exists is the difference between a bad afternoon and a lost weekend.

Before you call, have this ready

Sixty seconds of prep, a much faster rebooking.

    • Your reservation code and the affected flight number
    • Your timestamps: original departure time and when the delay was announced, they place you on the right side of the 4-hour line
    • Does the route touch the US? That switches on the DOT refund, the tarmac clock and the 15-hour bag target
    • Your real deadline, a shift, a wedding, a connection on another ticket, so we rebuild around what actually matters

Claim the voucher before you leave the building. The 25% e-voucher is the most forgettable entitlement on this page: it isn't cash, nobody at the gate volunteers it, and its 90-day redemption clock runs whether you remember it or not. Before you walk out, ask for it in writing with a date on it. If you call us, chasing that voucher, and the refund if one is owed, is part of working the case, not an extra.

    Frequently asked

What does Volaris owe you after a long delay or cancellation?+
Volaris's own published compensation policy draws its main line at 4 hours. Past that, or on a cancellation, the policy provides rebooking, free phone and email access, meals, a hotel plus ground transport if the disruption strands you overnight, and a compensation e-voucher of no less than 25% of the ticket or segment price. Delays under 4 hours trigger the policy's lighter items. This is the airline's own commitment, not a statute, and its terms can change, so we confirm the current version against your case on the call.
How does the Volaris 25% compensation voucher work?+
Under Volaris's published policy, qualifying disruptions come with an electronic voucher worth no less than 25% of the price of the affected ticket or segment. Two clocks matter: the voucher must be redeemed within 90 days, and it is valid for travel within 12 months. It is a commitment Volaris publishes itself, not something Mexican law hands you automatically, so ask for it by name, in writing, before you leave the airport, and note the date so the 90-day window doesn't quietly expire.
What are my rights on a delayed Volaris flight to or from the US?+
Two layers stack. Volaris's US Customer Service Plan sets service targets: delayed checked bags delivered within a 15-hour target, complaints acknowledged within 30 days and answered within 60, and a tarmac plan capping ground holds at 4 hours with food and water by hour 2. Separately, US DOT rules say that when a flight is cancelled or significantly changed, 3 or more hours domestic, 6 or more international, and you decline the alternative, the ticket-price refund is automatic. DOT does not guarantee hotels or meals; those come only from the airline's own policy.
Will Volaris put me on another airline if my flight is cancelled?+
Nothing in Volaris's published policies promises rebooking onto another carrier, and as a point-to-point low-cost airline it often has no partner to hand you to and no later frequency the same day on thinner routes. That is the honest ULCC trade: the fare is low partly because the safety net is. When a cancellation lands, the useful question is what can actually get you there, another Volaris routing, another airline on a new ticket, or a refund plus a rebuilt plan, and working those options fast is exactly what our phone desk does.
