Delta's "Basic" fares in premium cabins now carry change and cancel fees

Delta has been spreading its cheapest "Basic" fare beyond the main cabin, and it now sells a restricted Basic version inside its premium cabins too: First Basic, Premium Select Basic and Basic Business. The catch that is easy to miss: unlike standard Delta Main, Comfort, First, Premium Select and Delta One, which carry no change fee, these premium "Basic" fares carry both a change fee and a cancellation fee, and the amount runs well above the ordinary Main Basic fee.

Everything else is unchanged. Standard main-cabin and above still have no change fee, you just pay any fare difference. Delta Main Basic and Comfort Basic are the same as before. What is new is the fee attached to the Basic versions of the premium cabins.

Why it matters

The word "Basic" is doing a lot of quiet work here, and it is easy to skip past when you are buying a nice seat. Someone who books "Premium Select Basic" thinking they have a flexible premium ticket can be caught out by a steep fee to change or cancel it later. The seat is premium; the fare rules are not.

We do not publish the exact fee amounts, they change, and yours depends on your ticket, but the rule of thumb is simple: if your Delta fare has the word "Basic" in its name, even in a premium cabin, treat it as fee-bearing.

What to do
