Change, cancel or fix your Delta flight

On Delta, two things decide what's possible: how fast you act, and which fare you bought. Every Delta ticket has a 24-hour risk-free window, even Basic Economy. After that, Main Cabin and up flex with no change fee, while Basic Economy locks. Answer two quick questions and we'll show what's likely, then a live agent can do it for you at any hour.

How Delta changes & cancellations work

The rules in plain language. Your exact fare always decides, we'll confirm it on the call.

    24-hour risk-free, even Basic Economy:

Every ticket bought directly from Delta can be cancelled within 24 hours for a full refund, Basic Economy included. The deadline is midnight the day after purchase, or the first flight's departure, whichever comes first.

After 24 hours, your fare sets the rules:

Delta Main (Main Cabin) and above generally have no change fee, you pay only the difference if the new flight costs more. Delta Main Basic can't be changed at all once the window closes.

The "Basic" fares in premium cabins are the exception:

Delta now sells a restricted "Basic" version inside its premium cabins, First Basic, Premium Select Basic and Basic Business. Unlike standard Main Cabin and above, these carry both a change fee and a cancellation fee, and the amount runs far higher than the regular Main Basic fee. If your ticket says "Basic" in a premium cabin, treat it as fee-bearing and let us confirm the exact figure before you move it.

    Cancelling a non-refundable fare:

If you cancel a non-refundable ticket (Basic or standard Main) after 24 hours, the remaining value comes back as an eCredit minus any applicable fee, not cash. Basic returns less because a fee applies.

    Same-day changes exclude Basic:

Main Cabin and above can often use same-day standby or a same-day confirmed change; Delta Main Basic is not eligible for either.

If Delta cancels or reschedules you:

When the disruption is Delta's, a cancellation or a significant schedule change, you can take a refund of the ticket price or a free rebooking, even on Basic Economy. That's separate from voluntary changes.

Fees and fare differences depend on your ticket and route; we never publish a flat amount because yours is specific, an agent quotes the exact figure, and our service fee, before anything is charged. You can always do it yourself free at delta.com. (Managing your booking, seats, contact details, changes, all lives here too.)

Delta fares and how easily they flex

Where your ticket sits decides how much it can move. Higher = more flexible.

    Delta Main Basic
No changes after 24h; cancel for an eCredit minus a fee; no same-day standby
    Delta Main
No change fee on most routes; pay any fare difference
    Delta Comfort / Premium Select
Same flexibility as Main, with more room and priority
    Delta First / Delta One
The most flexible, but watch for a restricted "Basic" version now sold in these cabins, which carries both a change and a cancellation fee
    Any Delta ticket
24-hour risk-free full refund right after booking

Refund or eCredit? What you'll likely get

It comes down to who caused the change and which fare you hold.

    You cancel by choice

    Most common

    • Non-refundable fares return an eCredit, minus any fee
    • Basic Economy returns less because a fee applies
    • eCredits carry expiry dates and conditions
    • Refundable fares (if you bought one) come back as cash

    Delta cancels or reschedules

    Better for you

    • A refund of the ticket price if you decline the new flight
    • Or a free rebooking on the next flight
    • Applies even on Basic Economy
    • Significant schedule changes usually qualify

Just booked and having second thoughts? Watch the clock. Delta's 24-hour rule lets you cancel any ticket bought direct, even Basic Economy, for a full refund. The window is midnight the day after purchase. If you booked today and aren't sure, call us before it closes.

    Frequently asked

Can I change a Basic Economy ticket on Delta?+
Not after the first 24 hours. Delta Main Basic can't be changed once the 24-hour window closes; if you cancel, you get an eCredit for the value minus a fee. Within 24 hours of booking, though, even Basic Economy can be cancelled for a full refund. Give us your confirmation number and we'll tell you exactly what yours allows.
Does Delta have a bereavement fare if someone has died?+
Yes. Delta offers a bereavement fare for the death of an immediate family member, spouse or partner, parent, child, sibling, grandparent or grandchild, and in-laws, plus aunt, uncle, niece and nephew. You have to be a SkyMiles member (you can join when you book), and it can't be bought on delta.com, it's phone only. It waives the change or service fee on the outbound and/or return, though a fare difference can still apply, and travel generally needs to start within seven days. This is one of the hardest things to arrange while grieving, tell us what's happening and we'll set it up for you.
Will I get cash back or a credit?+
It depends on who caused it and your fare. If Delta cancels or makes a big schedule change and you decline the new flight, you're owed a refund of the ticket price. If you cancel a non-refundable fare by choice, you generally get an eCredit minus any fee, not cash. We'll tell you which applies to your ticket.
I booked a few hours ago, can I cancel free?+
Almost certainly yes. Every ticket bought directly from Delta has 24-hour risk-free cancellation for a full refund. Basic Economy included. The deadline is midnight the day after you buy, or the departure of the first flight, whichever comes first. Call us right away and we'll act on it.
Do you charge to change it for me?+
Yes, we're an independent agency and charge a service fee to handle your booking, quoted before anything is charged. Any Delta fare difference is separate and set by the airline. You can always manage it yourself at delta.com at no cost.
