How Delta changes & cancellations work
The rules in plain language. Your exact fare always decides, we'll confirm it on the call.
Every ticket bought directly from Delta can be cancelled within 24 hours for a full refund, Basic Economy included. The deadline is midnight the day after purchase, or the first flight's departure, whichever comes first.
Delta Main (Main Cabin) and above generally have no change fee, you pay only the difference if the new flight costs more. Delta Main Basic can't be changed at all once the window closes.
Delta now sells a restricted "Basic" version inside its premium cabins, First Basic, Premium Select Basic and Basic Business. Unlike standard Main Cabin and above, these carry both a change fee and a cancellation fee, and the amount runs far higher than the regular Main Basic fee. If your ticket says "Basic" in a premium cabin, treat it as fee-bearing and let us confirm the exact figure before you move it.
If you cancel a non-refundable ticket (Basic or standard Main) after 24 hours, the remaining value comes back as an eCredit minus any applicable fee, not cash. Basic returns less because a fee applies.
Main Cabin and above can often use same-day standby or a same-day confirmed change; Delta Main Basic is not eligible for either.
When the disruption is Delta's, a cancellation or a significant schedule change, you can take a refund of the ticket price or a free rebooking, even on Basic Economy. That's separate from voluntary changes.
Fees and fare differences depend on your ticket and route; we never publish a flat amount because yours is specific, an agent quotes the exact figure, and our service fee, before anything is charged. You can always do it yourself free at delta.com. (Managing your booking, seats, contact details, changes, all lives here too.)
Delta fares and how easily they flex
Where your ticket sits decides how much it can move. Higher = more flexible.
