When Delta owes you a cash refund
These are the situations where money goes back to your card, not a credit.
Under US DOT rules, if Delta cancels or makes a significant schedule change, generally 3+ hours domestic or 6+ hours international, a changed airport or added connections, and you decline the alternative, you're owed a refund of the ticket price to your original payment. This holds even on Basic Economy.
Any ticket bought directly from Delta can be cancelled within 24 hours for a full refund. Basic Economy included, as long as you booked before the deadline (midnight the day after purchase, or first departure).
Fully refundable tickets can be cancelled for cash back to your original payment, minus nothing. They cost more up front, but if your plans are genuinely uncertain, sometimes it's the cheaper choice overall.
US DOT rules require a refund of the checked-bag fee if your bag is significantly delayed. Keep the receipt and file it, it's money many travelers never claim.

DOT refund rules are under active revision, and the 3-hour/6-hour thresholds are the federal minimum, we confirm what's current when you call rather than quoting a rule that may have moved.
