How Copa refunds generally work
Whether cash comes back usually turns on two things: which fare you bought, and who caused the change.
Fully refundable tickets return to your original payment. Most published Copa fares — especially Economy Basic and Classic — are nonrefundable when you cancel by choice, and may instead leave a travel credit.
If Copa cancels your flight or makes a major schedule change, a refund is generally available regardless of how restricted the fare was. Airline-caused disruption is the strongest ground for cash back.
Copa tickets purchased in the United States generally qualify for a full refund if cancelled within 24 hours of booking. Timing is strict — this is one of the cleaner paths to your money back.
Outside those situations, a voluntary cancellation of a nonrefundable fare typically produces a travel credit rather than a refund. Credits have expiry dates and usage rules.
Card refunds usually take one or more billing cycles to appear. Filing the request correctly the first time is the fastest route — that's where we help.
Eligibility depends on your fare rules, route and the reason for the refund. We never quote refund amounts because yours depends on your ticket — an agent confirms what you're owed, and our service fee, before anything is filed. You can also request it free at copa.com.
Will it be cash, credit, or nothing?
The two questions that settle almost every Copa refund.
Cash refund is likely when…
Best case
- Copa cancelled or significantly rescheduled
- You hold a fully refundable fare
- You cancel a US ticket within the 24-hour window
- The refund goes to your original payment
Credit or nothing is likely when…
Nonrefundable
- You cancel a nonrefundable fare by choice
- Economy Basic returns little or nothing
- The fare rules exclude a cash refund
- A travel credit carries expiry and conditions
Where your fare stands on refunds
General guidance — the higher the fare, the better the refund terms.
Airline-caused disruption changes everything. Even a restricted Copa ticket can qualify for a cash refund when Copa cancels or heavily reschedules the flight — don't assume you're stuck with a credit. Call us and we'll check your ticket.
