Checking in for your Volaris flight

On most airlines, checking in early is free peace of mind. On Volaris it's a commitment: itinerary changes are allowed only before check-in, so the moment you check in, your ticket stops being changeable. Add Mexico's physical-ID rule for domestic flights and check-in becomes the step worth doing deliberately, not automatically. Here's how.

    How Volaris check-in generally works

General guidance plus the verified rules that bite. Exact windows depend on the airport and route.

    Online and app check-in:

Check in at volaris.com or in the Volaris app and save your boarding pass. With no bags to drop, that's the whole airport queue handled before you leave home.

Checking in is the point of no return:

Volaris allows itinerary changes only up to 4 hours before departure and only before check-in. Once you check in, changes are off the table, and the Cancel For Any Reason add-on stops applying too. If your plans have any wobble, change first, check in after.

Mexico domestic flights want a physical ID:

A valid original physical photo ID is required, and Volaris explicitly refuses photocopies and digital documents. Accepted options include the INE/IFE credential, a passport, an IMSS or ISSSTE card, an INAPAM card, a driver license or a military ID; foreigners can use a passport or residency document. If your habit is the ID in your phone's wallet, this rule exists for you.

Minors have their own ID list:

For a minor on a Mexico domestic flight, the accepted documents are a birth certificate, CURP, passport or a health-institution ID card. Bring the original, the photocopy rule applies to everyone.

    International documents are on you:

For international trips, Volaris defers to each destination country's entry rules and puts the responsibility on the traveler to confirm them with immigration or a consulate. Verify your destination's requirements well before travel day, and ask us if you're not sure where to look.

Check-in and boarding cutoffs vary by airport and route, and international document checks add time. If online check-in won't go through or a document question comes up, call us and we'll sort it before you travel. Volaris's own tools at volaris.com are free.

Before you leave for the airport

A quick pre-flight check that prevents most day-of problems.

    • Plans final? Then check in, it locks the ticket
    • Physical ID in your bag, the phone wallet doesn't board you in Mexico
    • Traveling with a minor? Their original document too
    • Bags paid for in advance, airport prices run higher
    • Recheck your flight status before leaving

Treat check-in as a decision, not a chore. On Volaris it's the moment your ticket stops being changeable and your Cancel For Any Reason protection ends. Ninety seconds of thought, is anything still moving?, before you tap the button saves the expensive kind of regret.

    Frequently asked

Should I check in for my Volaris flight as early as possible?+
Only if your plans are locked. Checking in ends your ability to change the itinerary, and kills the Cancel For Any Reason add-on if you bought it. Plans solid? Check in and enjoy the shorter airport visit. Plans wobbly? Change first, check in after.
Can I use the ID on my phone for a domestic flight in Mexico?+
No. Volaris explicitly refuses digital documents and photocopies for Mexico domestic flights, it wants a valid original physical photo ID, such as the INE/IFE credential, a passport, an IMSS, ISSSTE or INAPAM card, a driver license or a military ID. Travelers living in the US who run on phone wallets get caught by this one, put the physical card in your bag the night before.
What ID does my child need for a domestic flight?+
One of four options, in original form: a birth certificate, CURP, passport or a health-institution ID card. If the trip is international, the destination country's rules take over, and we'll help you confirm them.
    Online check-in won't accept me, what now?+
It happens with international itineraries, document checks or certain booking conditions, and often just means checking in at the airport. But call us and we'll confirm why, so there's no surprise at the counter.
