Volaris baggage, made simple

One Volaris rule causes more gate-side surprises than everything else combined: the Basic fare includes a checked bag but no carry-on, exactly backwards from what most travelers assume. Here's the whole ladder, from Zero's personal-item-only reality to Plus's 55 lb checked bag, so the scale at the airport is never the first to tell you.

    How Volaris baggage generally works

From Volaris's published allowances, identical for domestic and international. Your exact allowance depends on your fare.

Every fare includes a personal item:

One under-seat personal item is included on all three fares, Zero included. On Zero, that's the entire allowance, full stop.

Zero: the seat and nothing else:

No carry-on and no checked bag come with Zero. Both can be added for a charge, and adding them at booking is the cheap way, airport prices run higher. If you have any luggage at all, sort it before travel day.

Basic: a checked bag, but no carry-on:

This is the trap. Basic includes one checked bag of up to 33 lb at 62 linear inches, and still no carry-on. Travelers assume the cheap upgrade buys the roller in the bin, it buys the suitcase in the hold instead. Read this twice if you're booking Basic.

Plus: the only fare with the bin:

Plus includes a carry-on of 22 x 16 x 10 in, up to 44 lb combined with your personal item, plus a checked bag of up to 55 lb at 62 linear inches, alongside its flexibility perks. If the overhead bin is non-negotiable for you, Plus is where it lives.

Fees change too often to print:

Volaris's fee sheet is revised often, and the gap between booking-time and airport prices is real. We never publish amounts, an agent confirms the current figure for your exact bag on your exact flight, before anything is charged.

Allowances and add-on charges vary by fare and change often, so we don't publish bag prices. Tell us your ticket and we'll confirm your exact allowance and pre-pay bags for you, including the carry-on the cheap fares lack. Volaris's own tools at volaris.com are always free.

What travelers assume vs how Volaris does it

The habit that causes the gate-side surprise comes from flying US carriers.

    The US-carrier habit

    The assumption

    • The cheap fare keeps the carry-on, drops the checked bag
    • A carry-on is judged by size, rarely weighed
    • One bag bundle behaves like the next one up
    • The bin is free, the hold costs

    The Volaris reality

    The rule here

    • Basic includes the checked bag, not the carry-on
    • The carry-on allowance is 44 lb combined with your personal item
    • Only Plus includes the overhead bin
    • Every add-on is cheapest before the airport

Book the bag when you book the seat. On Volaris the same bag has more than one price, and the airport is the expensive place to buy it. Tell us what you're carrying when you book, or call before travel day, and we'll add exactly what you need at the better rate.

    Frequently asked

Does the Volaris Basic fare really not include a carry-on?+
Really. Basic includes a checked bag of up to 33 lb but no carry-on, only Plus includes one. It's the single most surprising rule on the airline, and it catches people whose habit comes from US carriers, where the cheap fare usually keeps the carry-on and drops the checked bag. Volaris does it the other way around.
What can I bring on a Zero fare?+
A personal item that fits under the seat, and that's the complete list. Any carry-on or checked bag is an add-on, cheapest at booking. Call us before the airport and we'll add exactly what you need to the reservation.
How big and heavy can my checked bag be?+
Up to 62 linear inches on every fare that includes or adds one, with 33 lb included on Basic and 55 lb on Plus. Anything heavier or additional is a paid add-on, and the current price depends on when and where you add it, we'll quote it before you commit.
What are the carry-on limits when I do have one?+
On Plus, or as a paid add-on: 22 x 16 x 10 inches, and up to 44 lb combined with your personal item. Weigh the pair at home, the combined figure is the one that counts.
