How American change & cancellation actually works
The mechanics behind the fork above, fare by fare.
American doesn't charge a change fee on American-operated flights for anything above Basic Economy. You'll still pay any fare difference if the replacement flight costs more than your original ticket. American doesn't publish that difference as a flat number because it moves with your specific route and dates.
American's own FAQ is explicit: Basic Economy cannot be changed at all once the first 24 hours after booking have passed. That's a harder rule than "changes cost extra", there is no change to buy, at any price, once that window closes.
American offers same-day change or standby across every fare type. Basic Economy included, for a fee. If you just need to move to an earlier or later flight the same day, this is usually simpler than a full change or cancellation.
Cancel any American ticket within 24 hours of purchase for a full refund, but only if you bought it at least 7 days before your scheduled departure. Buy closer to departure than that, and this window doesn't exist for that ticket at all, no matter the fare.
If a cancellation leaves you with a credit instead of cash, American requires the new travel to be completed within 1 year of the original ticket's purchase date, not from the date you cancelled. Don't let an old credit lapse unused.
These rules are American's own published fare terms, not ours, they vary by route, date, and fare bucket, and American changes them without much notice. We'll confirm your exact ticket's rules and quote our service fee before you're charged anything.
Basic Economy vs. everything else
Two very different sets of rules, depending on which side of this line your ticket falls.
Basic Economy
Most restricted
- Cannot be changed after the first 24 hours, at any price
- Same-day change/standby still available, for a fee
- 24-hour cancellation rule still applies, if bought 7+ days out
Main Cabin and above
Flexible
- No change fee on American-operated flights
- Fare difference still applies if the new flight costs more
- Same-day change/standby available too, for a fee
Not sure which fare you booked? The fare bucket is usually on your confirmation email or in "My Trips" on aa.com, or tell us your record locator and we'll look it up.
Have this ready before you call
Thirty seconds of prep gets it done on the first call.
- Record locator, the 6-character code on your confirmation
- Passenger name exactly as it appears on the ticket
- Original purchase date, it decides whether the 24-hour rule applies at all
- Fare type if you know it. Basic Economy changes everything about what's possible
What American doesn't publish, and what that means for you
A gap worth knowing about before you assume a fix is guaranteed.
American doesn't publish a name-correction process on aa.com. Its published rules cover minor spelling corrections, a transposed letter, a missing middle initial, but nothing describes how to fix a more substantial mistake, and nothing says a ticket can be transferred to a different traveler. That doesn't mean nothing can be done; it means American hasn't put the process in writing, so don't accept a flat "no" from a website FAQ as the final word. Call and let us find out what's actually possible with your specific booking before you assume a refund or a brand-new ticket is the only route forward.
Booked Basic Economy and need to change plans? Don't wait past the first 24 hours to decide, after that, American's own rules say the ticket can't be changed at all, at any price. If you're still inside that window, cancelling for a full refund and rebooking may be your only real move.
Managing the rest of your trip yourself
Changing or cancelling is only part of it, most of a booking you can manage online, free.
With your record locator, "My trips" on aa.com or the American app lets you handle most of this yourself at no cost: pick or change seats, add checked or special-item bags, update contact details and AAdvantage info, and request small spelling fixes. Arrange special requests, wheelchair assistance, a pet, an unaccompanied minor, ahead of time rather than at the gate. When a self-service change fails, a payment won't go through, a name won't correct, a fare won't reissue, that's the moment a call saves the trip.
