    It rebooks you on the next American flight — free:

    When American cancels, significantly delays, or a delay would make you miss a connection, it rebooks you on its next flight with open seats at no additional cost.

    A partner airline — only if it's American's fault:

    If no American flight works until the next day and the disruption is within American's control, it may rebook you on a partner airline with open seats. Weather does not qualify.

    Or a refund may be the better move:

    When American cancels — or significantly changes your flight and you decline the alternatives — US DOT rules require a refund of your fare to your original payment, even on Basic Economy. DOT counts a change as "significant" at a domestic flight moved 3+ hours, an international one 6+ hours, or a changed airport — but that's the federal minimum, not the ceiling. Some airlines' own policies trigger sooner; many have pulled back to exactly the floor. We'll check whether American's is more generous. (DOT is also actively revising these rules, so we confirm the current position before advising.) Accept the new flight and that refund right generally ends — worth a 2-minute call to compare first.

    American's self-rebooking usually shows only American's own next departures and the obvious re-routes. A person can pull partner-airline seats and multi-stop routings the app never offers — sometimes the difference between "tonight" and "tomorrow afternoon."

    Missed your connection?

    The clock, not the counter, is your problem.

    If an American delay makes you misconnect, American will rebook you — but on a busy connecting hub like Miami (MIA), Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) or Charlotte (CLT), the seats on the next good flight are gone within minutes. Everyone on your delayed plane is trying to rebook at the same moment, and the last aisle-and-window pair goes to whoever reaches an agent first.

    That's the whole game: don't stand in the airport line hoping. Call while you're still walking off the jet bridge — a person can hold a seat on the next departure, look at partner-airline options if it's American's fault, and route you around a full flight before the counter even calls your name.

    Here's the hard truth East-Coast cruisers learn the expensive way: American's responsibility ends at getting you on a flight. It will not reimburse a cruise you missed because your flight ran late, and a ship does not wait. If a delay threatens your embarkation or a wedding you can't be late for, the answer isn't a complaint form — it's getting on an earlier or alternate flight immediately.

    Standby & same-day options on American

    Two different tools — one guarantees a seat, one doesn't. Both are US, Puerto Rico & USVI only.

    Same-day standby (free for AAdvantage):

    Wait for an earlier American flight on your day of travel. It's complimentary for AAdvantage members and eligible travelers — but standby doesn't guarantee a seat if the flight is full.

    Confirmed Flight Change (guaranteed, for a charge):

    Lock in a specific seat on a different same-day American flight. Any traveler can buy a Confirmed Flight Change; it's often waived for AAdvantage elite members. We'll tell you the cost before you commit.

    What same-day options can't do:

    You can't change your departure or arrival airport, your connection city, the number of stops, or switch a nonstop to a connection — and they don't apply to international itineraries.

    Rescheduled and never told?

    Silent schedule changes are more common than people realize.

    Airlines routinely move flights weeks or months ahead — a "schedule change" — and the notification email doesn't always land. Before you travel, check your trip on aa.com or the American app. If American moved you to a time that no longer works, a significant schedule change generally gives you the right to a free rebooking or a refund — but only if you catch it.     Can I stand by for an earlier American flight?+
    On American flights within and between the US, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, yes — same-day standby is free for AAdvantage members and eligible travelers, but it does not guarantee a seat.     My delay will make me miss my cruise — what can you do?+
