When it's American's fault: what the airline provides
American's Customer Service Plan, updated January 22, 2025, in plain English. "Within American's control" means crew, maintenance or IT, not weather or air traffic.
On a cancellation or significant delay within its control, American rebooks you on its next available flight free. If nothing on American works until the next day, it may rebook you on a partner airline (oneworld) with open seats instead.
If a delay or cancellation within American's control causes a wait of 3 or more hours beyond your scheduled departure, American provides a meal voucher.
When a controllable delay or cancellation leaves you overnight away from home, American provides a hotel voucher, or reimburses reasonable hotel costs if none is available through the airline.
Regardless of cause, American's plan guarantees snacks, water, restroom access and basic medical care once you're stuck on the tarmac past 2 hours.
Weather and air-traffic-control delays are not within American's control, so the hotel and meal vouchers don't apply, even though American will still rebook you free. That distinction is the whole game, and it's the same weather stance most airlines take.
DOT vs. American, don't confuse the two
Two separate systems. One is federal law; one is American's own plan. People mix them up and expect the wrong thing.
US DOT, the law
Ticket price
- A significant change you decline → automatic refund of the ticket price to your original payment
- Verified thresholds: 3+ hrs domestic, 6+ hrs international, a changed airport, added connections or a downgrade
- American cannot force you into a voucher, the refund must be cash to your original payment
- Does NOT require hotels, meals or compensation for lost time
American's Customer Service Plan
Care, not cash
- Meal and hotel vouchers, plus tarmac provisions, but only for controllable disruptions
- Free rebooking, including a partner airline when American-caused and nothing works until tomorrow
- Nothing beyond the rebooking for weather
- You can compare an airline's plan against others at flightrights.gov
The 3-hour/6-hour figures are the federal minimum, and these DOT rules are under active revision, we confirm what's current when you call rather than quoting a rule that may have moved.
What a person can do that aa.com and the app can't
This is the whole reason to call instead of tapping "rebook" and taking what the screen shows you.
American's self-rebooking usually shows only American's own next departures and the obvious re-routes. A person can pull partner-airline seats and multi-stop routings the app never offers, sometimes the difference between "tonight" and "tomorrow afternoon."
An agent can grab and hold the last good seat while you check whether it still makes your cruise or meeting. The app makes you commit blind, and the seat's gone if you hesitate.
Tell us the time you absolutely must land by and we work the last flight that still makes it, not just the "next available" the screen defaults to.
Whether a delay is big enough to unlock a DOT refund or American's own hotel/meal vouchers is a judgment call. We know how it's decided and how to ask, so you're not guessing at a kiosk at 11 p.m.
Missed your connection?
The clock, not the counter, is your problem.
If an American delay makes you misconnect, American will rebook you, but on a busy connecting hub like Miami (MIA), Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) or Charlotte (CLT), the seats on the next good flight are gone within minutes. Everyone on your delayed plane is trying to rebook at the same moment, and the last aisle-and-window pair goes to whoever reaches an agent first.
That's the whole game: don't stand in the airport line hoping. Call while you're still walking off the jet bridge, a person can hold a seat on the next departure, look at partner-airline options if it's American's fault, and route you around a full flight before the counter even calls your name.
Missed cruise, wedding, or a nonrefundable trip?
Especially out of Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Port Canaveral.
Here's the hard truth East-Coast cruisers learn the expensive way: American's responsibility ends at getting you on a flight. It will not reimburse a cruise you missed because your flight ran late, and a ship does not wait. If a delay threatens your embarkation or a wedding you can't be late for, the answer isn't a complaint form, it's getting on an earlier or alternate flight immediately.
That can mean same-day standby, a confirmed same-day change, or an entirely different routing an agent can see that you can't. Tell us your sailing or event time and we'll work backward from the last flight that still makes it, fast, while seats exist.
Standby & same-day options on American
Two different tools, one guarantees a seat, one doesn't. Both are US, Puerto Rico & USVI only.
Wait for an earlier American flight on your day of travel. It's complimentary for AAdvantage members and eligible travelers, but standby doesn't guarantee a seat if the flight is full.
Lock in a specific seat on a different same-day American flight. Any traveler can buy a Confirmed Flight Change; it's often waived for AAdvantage elite members. We'll tell you the cost before you commit.
You can't change your departure or arrival airport, your connection city, the number of stops, or switch a nonstop to a connection, and they don't apply to international itineraries.
Rescheduled and never told?
Silent schedule changes are more common than people realize.
Airlines routinely move flights weeks or months ahead, a "schedule change", and the notification email doesn't always land. Before you travel, check your trip on aa.com or the American app. If American moved you to a time that no longer works, a significant schedule change generally gives you the right to a free rebooking or a DOT-backed refund, but only if you catch it. Give us your record locator and we'll check your reservation for a change you were never told about.
Have this ready when you call
Thirty seconds of prep is the difference between the last seat and the next flight.
- Record locator, the 6-character code and passenger names
- Acceptable alternates, nearby airports or a later day you could take
- Whether a partner airline is OK if American has nothing until tomorrow
- Any hard deadline, a cruise, wedding or connection time we route backward from
Call while you're still in line. When an American flight cancels, hundreds rebook at once and the phone reaches an agent faster than the airport counter, you can be confirmed on the next departure, and any hotel or meal voucher you're owed, before you'd even reach the front of the queue.
