How Avianca changes & cancellations generally work
The rules in plain language. Your exact fare family always governs — we'll confirm it on the call.
Avianca's economy fares run XS, S, M and L, plus XL and XXL in business. The higher you go, the easier and cheaper changes and cancellations become. The fare on your ticket is what decides your options — not a single company-wide rule.
The lowest fare is usually non-changeable and non-refundable. Don't assume it's hopeless, though — special circumstances and airline-caused disruptions can still open a door. Have us check before you walk away from the ticket.
Mid and upper fares generally allow changes, and often a refund, subject to fare rules and any difference in price if the new flight costs more.
For tickets bought in the United States, US rules generally allow a full refund if you cancel within 24 hours of booking and you booked at least 7 days before departure.
When the airline cancels or significantly changes your schedule, you're generally entitled to rebooking or a refund — even on an otherwise non-refundable fare.
Rules vary by fare, route and how your ticket was issued. We never publish change or cancellation amounts because yours depends on your specific ticket — an agent tells you the exact figure before anything is charged.
Avianca fares, from restricted to flexible
Where your ticket sits on the ladder decides how easily it changes. Higher = more flexible.
Refund or credit? What you'll likely get
It comes down to who cancelled and your fare.
You cancel by choice
Most common
- Restricted fares (XS) usually give no cash back
- Value may be held as a travel credit where the fare allows
- Higher fares are more likely to refund
- Credits carry expiry dates and rules
Avianca cancels or reschedules
Better for you
- A refund or free rebooking is generally available
- Applies even to otherwise non-refundable fares
- Significant schedule changes usually count
- Rights can vary by route and cause
Have this ready before you call
Thirty seconds of prep and we can act on the first call.
- Reservation code — the 6-character locator on your confirmation
- Passenger name exactly as on the ticket
- Current dates and any new dates you'd like
- LifeMiles number, if you have one
Mind the 24-hour rule. If you bought in the US within the last 24 hours and at least 7 days before departure, US rules generally allow a full refund regardless of fare — but the window is strict, so don't wait.
