How Avianca baggage generally works
General guidance. Your exact allowance depends on your fare, route and LifeMiles status.
This is the heart of Avianca baggage. Basic includes a personal item only, so the carry-on and any checked bag are bought separately. Light and Classic add more, and Business carries the most. Knowing your fare answers most questions.
The carry-on is 10 kg and up to 55 x 35 x 25 cm, and the personal item is up to 45 x 35 x 20 cm. On Basic the carry-on is not included, so a passenger who shows up with one is charged at the gate. Confirm before you pack.
A checked bag is up to 23 kg (50 lb) in economy and 32 kg (70 lb) on a Business fare, each up to 158 linear cm. The number of included bags rises with the fare, and Basic may include none.
Overweight and oversize pieces are accepted up to 230 linear cm and 99 lb for a fee, but there is a trap: flights to and from Europe cap each piece at 70 lb, no matter what. Plan for the stricter European limit if that is your route.
Pre-paying an extra checked bag online is generally cheaper than adding it at the counter, and it speeds you through on the day. On Basic and Light this is the smart move.
Allowances and excess-bag charges vary by fare, route and status, and change often. We do not publish bag prices. Tell us your ticket and we will confirm your exact allowance and pre-pay bags for you. Avianca's own tools at avianca.com are always free.
Avianca baggage by fare, at a glance
General rules. Your exact allowance depends on fare, route and LifeMiles status.
Carry-on only vs. checking a bag
Pick the right approach before you get to the airport.
Carry-on plus personal item
Fastest, skip bag drop
- Carry-on is 10 kg, up to 55 x 35 x 25 cm
- Skips the check-in bag queue
- Not included on Basic; a gate carry-on is charged there
- Liquids follow the cabin rules
Checked baggage
For bigger trips
- Up to 23 kg in economy, 32 kg on a Business fare
- Cheaper added in advance than at the counter
- Overweight or oversize up to 230 cm and 99 lb for a fee
- To and from Europe, each piece caps at 70 lb
Two size traps to remember. On Basic, the carry-on is not free, so a carry-on at the gate is charged. And on any flight to or from Europe, each checked piece caps at 70 lb regardless of the usual 99 lb allowance. Tell us your route and we will make sure your bags fit the rules before you fly.
