How Avianca seats & upgrades generally work

The essentials. Availability and price depend on fare, route, aircraft and timing.

    Seat selection depends on fare:

Higher fares often include complimentary seat selection; on lower XS/S fares choosing a specific seat usually costs extra or is assigned at check-in.

    Sitting together isn't automatic:

If you're travelling as a family or group, book and select seats as early as you can — the best adjacent seats go first, especially on full routes.

    Preferred and extra-legroom seats:

Bulkhead, exit-row and front-of-cabin seats carry a premium on most fares. They're limited, so they sell out on popular flights.

    Upgrading to business (XL/XXL):

You may be able to upgrade at booking, later through manage-booking, with LifeMiles, or via an offer from the airline — availability varies a lot by route and day.

    LifeMiles can help:

Elite tiers may get complimentary or discounted seat selection and better upgrade access. Add your LifeMiles number so any benefit applies.

Seat and upgrade prices vary by route, cabin and timing and change constantly, so we don't list amounts. Tell us your flight and we'll check what's open and reserve it for you.

    Seat options by fare

General guidance — what's included and what's paid depends on your fare and route.

    XS / S
Seat selection usually paid, or assigned free at check-in
    M / L
Often include or discount standard seat selection
    Preferred / extra-legroom
A premium on most fares; limited and sell out first
    XL / XXL (Business)
Premium cabin seating included, with priority services

Ways to move up to business

More than one path — availability varies a lot by route and day.

    Pay to upgrade

    Most predictable

    • At booking, or later via manage-booking
    • Airline upgrade offers before departure
    • Depends on business (XL/XXL) seats being open
    • Price varies by route and demand

    Use LifeMiles

    If space is open

    • Mileage upgrade space is separate from cash seats
    • Comes and goes — check early
    • Elite tiers may get better access
    • Add your LifeMiles number so it's linked

Travelling as a family or group?

A few habits that keep everyone together.

    • Select seats right after booking — the best pairs go first
    • Book the whole party on one reservation where possible
    • If good seats aren't showing, call us to see the full map
    • Check seats again after any aircraft change

Add your LifeMiles number before you fly. Elite tiers can unlock complimentary or discounted seat selection and better upgrade access — but only if the number is on the reservation.

    Frequently asked

Can I choose my seat for free?+
On higher fares, often yes; on the lowest fares, seat selection is usually paid or assigned automatically at check-in. Tell us your fare and route and we'll confirm what a specific seat will take.
How do I make sure my family sits together?+
Select seats as early as possible — ideally right after booking. If good adjacent seats aren't showing, call us; we can look at the map and options across the whole party.
Can I upgrade to business with LifeMiles?+
Sometimes, depending on availability and the fare rules. Mileage upgrade space is separate from the regular seat map and comes and goes. Give us your dates and LifeMiles number and we'll check.
Is it worth paying for extra legroom?+
On longer flights many travellers think so, but it's personal. We can tell you which seats are extra-legroom on your specific aircraft so you're not paying blind.
