Checking in for your Avianca flight

Check in early, carry the right documents, and mind the cutoffs. That is most of a smooth Avianca departure. Because many Avianca trips are international and connect through Bogota, a little extra time goes a long way. Here is what to do and when.

    How Avianca check-in generally works

General timings. Exact windows depend on the airport and, since many Avianca flights are international, on entry requirements too.

    Online and app check-in:

Avianca check-in on avianca.com and the Avianca app generally opens 24 hours before departure and closes shortly before the flight. It is the easiest way and usually gives the best remaining seats.

    Airport counters and bag drop:

If you are checking a bag or need documents verified, use the counter or bag drop. Bag-drop and boarding cutoffs vary by airport, and international document checks take time, so arrive earlier than you would for a short domestic hop.

    Boarding groups close firmly:

Avianca boards by groups and closes boarding several minutes before departure. Higher fares, Business and LifeMiles elite status board earlier, so being at the gate on time matters.

    Documents for international travel:

Passports, visas and entry requirements for your destination are your responsibility and are checked before boarding. For international flights to or from Colombia, the Check-Mig form is completed on Migracion Colombia's own site, not Avianca's, within 24 hours of the flight.

    Connecting through Bogota:

If you connect at Bogota El Dorado, know your gate and connection time. An international arrival connecting to a domestic flight means clearing immigration and customs, rechecking your bag, and clearing security again, so do not cut it fine.

Check-in and boarding cutoffs vary by airport, route and aircraft, and international document checks add time. If online check-in will not go through or a document question comes up, call us and we will help you sort it before you travel. Avianca's own tools at avianca.com are free.

Before you leave for the airport

A quick pre-flight check that prevents most day-of problems on an international trip.

    • Check in online and save the mobile boarding pass
    • Confirm passport, visa and entry requirements for your destination
    • For Colombia, complete Check-Mig on Migracion Colombia's site within 24h
    • Know your bag drop and boarding cutoffs, and your Bogota connection time

If online check-in will not accept you, it is often just an international document check or a ticket condition, and usually you simply check in at the airport. Call us and we will confirm why so there is no surprise at the Avianca counter.

Do I need the Check-Mig form for Colombia?+

For international Avianca flights, and especially if you connect through Bogota, arrive well ahead to allow for bag drop, document checks and security. When in doubt, earlier is safer.
