How travelling with a pet on Avianca generally works

In the cabin, the pet and carrier together may not exceed 22 lb (10 kg), and the soft carrier must fit 56 x 36 x 25 cm under the seat. Only one pet per passenger travels in the cabin. A second pet must go in the hold, and two pets may not share a row unless they are one family group.
In the hold, a pet including its carrier may weigh up to 154 lb (70 kg) in a rigid carrier. Anything heavier ships through Avianca Cargo, not as accompanied baggage. Start there early if your dog is large.
This is the trap that strands people. Pets travel only on aircraft with a ventilated hold, capped at 15 pets per flight on the 32S family aircraft. Aircraft without a ventilated hold, and flights operated by Avianca Clic, carry no pets at all. Confirm the specific flight, not just the route.
Pet spaces are limited and cannot be added last minute, so reserve the space at least 48 hours before departure. Certain routes and seasons also carry weather-related hold restrictions, published per route.
A trained service dog has no weight or size cap. The 22 lb cabin limit and the 154 lb hold limit apply to pets and emotional-support animals, never to service dogs, which are governed by training and certification. Do not let anyone tell you your service dog is over a weight limit.
You must carry the health and sanitary documents required at the origin, at any connection, and at the destination, not just the final country. Missing paperwork at a connecting point is a common reason pets are refused.
