The nonstop rule, and the mandatory service above age 8
Two facts do most of the work on this page, so read them together.
Azul draws its lines in a way that catches families used to other airlines. Start with age: a child under 8 is not carried alone, so a responsible adult has to be on the booking and on the flight. From 8 through 15 years 11 months a child may travel without an accompanying adult, but only through Azul's escort service, and in that band the service is mandatory. You cannot decline it to save the cost and put the child on the flight unsupervised. It is a paid service, quoted before you are charged, billed per traveler per flight.
The second fact is the one that actually breaks plans: the escort covers direct, Azul-operated flights only. A solo minor's journey has to be a single nonstop. That is easy to miss, because a booking engine will happily sell a child straight through a connection in Campinas or Confins. On a connecting itinerary, the only minor Azul will carry is a 16 or 17 year old who is not using the escort service. So build a younger child's solo trip as one nonstop Azul flight, or send them with an adult, there is no third option that quietly works.
Four authorization routes, and why the right one matters
The section you cannot copy from a generic minors guide, because it is specific to how Brazil and Azul handle minor authorizations.
Brazil is strict about minors, especially leaving the country, but it is more flexible than some carriers about how you prove authorization. Azul recognises four routes: a passport endorsement, a judicial (court) authorization, the electronic AEV travel authorization, or a notarized parental authorization done at a cartório. That the electronic AEV is accepted is a genuine convenience, and a real difference from carriers that reject anything signed digitally.
You can skip the court route if the child travels with a relative up to the third degree, already holds a notarized or passport authorization, or is flying to a contiguous or same-metropolitan-region city. Knowing which exemption fits saves a trip to the courthouse.
Exit rules for minors leaving Brazil are set partly by the authorities and courts, so an international trip needs the authorization done correctly, and the child's identity documents carried as originals. The margin for a paperwork error is smaller than on a domestic hop.
The four routes are not interchangeable for every situation. The fastest way to avoid a counter refusal is to confirm which authorization your specific trip and relationship require, which is a two-minute check we run before you pay.

The infant and child fares, and the older teenager
Where a child sits on Azul's age ladder changes both the price and the paperwork.
An infant under 2 travels free on domestic flights and at a reduced fare (around 10 percent of the adult fare) internationally, on an adult's lap or in an approved seat. A child from 2 to 12 pays the full adult fare. Neither is an unaccompanied-minor case, since both fly with an adult, but the fare difference is worth knowing before you book a family trip.
At the other end, a 16 or 17 year old is old enough that the escort is optional rather than mandatory, and within South America the service becomes optional from age 12. That is genuinely simpler and usually cheaper, since the escort charge does not apply. It is not a free pass on documents, though, a parental authorization is still expected, and for a trip leaving Brazil the same strictness about minors applies. Confirm the exact form for your teenager's route before you assume they can check in like an adult.
Before you book, the checklist
Six answers now prevent a child being refused at the counter.
- Is the trip a single nonstop Azul flight? The escort does not cover connections, so a stop rules out a younger solo child
- Is the child at least 8? Under 8 cannot fly alone at all, so an adult has to be on the flight
- 8 through 15 years 11 months and solo? The escort is mandatory and paid, and belongs in the budget from the start
- Which authorization route? Passport endorsement, judicial, electronic AEV, or notarized cartório, matched to your case
- International trip? Confirm the exit authorization and carry the child's identity documents as originals
- 16 or 17 (or 12+ within South America)? The escort is optional, but still confirm the parental authorization for the route
Check the routing before you check the fare. The two ways an Azul minor's trip falls apart are the connection trap, an escort that only covers nonstop Azul flights, and the authorization, the wrong document at a Brazilian counter. Both are cheap to fix in advance and expensive to discover at the airport.
