What Hawaiian's care commitments actually provide
Hawaiian's own commitment, in plain English, separate from the federal DOT rule below.
You're rebooked on Hawaiian's next available flight at no charge. This is the first step regardless of cause, and it's separate from the meal, hotel, and discount code or Atmos Rewards choice described below, which depend on why the disruption happened.
If the disruption is within Hawaiian's control, not weather, air traffic control, or illness, and the delay passes 2 hours, Hawaiian provides a meal.
This applies when you're stuck overnight, and you're 100 or more miles from home, because of something within Hawaiian's control. Miss either condition and the hotel doesn't apply.
On a controllable delay or cancellation of 3 or more hours, Hawaiian's commitment is your choice, a discount code worth at least $50, or 2,000 or more Atmos Rewards points. This is on top of, not instead of, being rebooked.
Weather, air traffic control, and illness aren't eligible for the meal, the hotel and ground transport, or the discount code or Atmos Rewards choice. The rebooking right above still applies regardless of cause.
DOT vs. Hawaiian, two things, don't confuse them
One is federal law; the other is Hawaiian's own commitment. People mix them up and expect the wrong thing.
US DOT, the law
Ticket price
- A significant change you decline → automatic refund of the ticket price to your original payment
- Verified thresholds: 3+ hrs domestic, 6+ hrs international, a changed airport, added connections or a downgrade
- Applies regardless of cause. Hawaiian cannot force you into a voucher instead
- Does NOT require hotels, meals or compensation for lost time
Hawaiian's own commitment
Rebooking, meal/hotel on controllable disruptions, discount code or points
- Rebooking on the next available flight, regardless of cause
- Controllable delay 2+ hrs → meal; overnight 100+ miles from home → hotel plus ground transport
- Controllable 3+ hrs or a cancellation → choice of a discount code (at least $50) or 2,000+ Atmos Rewards
- Weather, ATC and illness excluded from the meal, hotel and discount code
Keep them separate in your head: Hawaiian's meal, its hotel and ground transport, and its discount code or Atmos Rewards choice all come from its own commitment, and every piece of it only applies when the cause is within Hawaiian's control. The DOT refund fires whenever YOU decline a significant change, regardless of who caused it, and it's cash to your ticket price only, never a hotel, meal or discount code. You can compare airline plans at flightrights.gov, and these DOT rules are also under active revision, so we confirm what's current when you call.
Missed an island connection? Here's what actually applies
A short interisland hop and a long mainland or overseas flight run on the same rebooking rule, but the stakes are different.
Say you're flying Kona to Honolulu to connect onward to Los Angeles or Seattle, or you're routing Lihue through Honolulu to continue on to Asia or the South Pacific, and the interisland leg runs late. Either way, Hawaiian rebooks you on its next available flight at no charge. If the misconnect traces back to a cause within Hawaiian's control and the resulting delay passes 2 hours, the meal applies, and past 3 hours, or if it becomes a cancellation, so does the discount code or Atmos Rewards choice, the same as any other controllable disruption.
Hawaiian's interisland network runs through Honolulu with fewer flights per day between the islands than a mainland carrier runs between major cities, so a missed connection can mean a longer wait for the next open seat, not just a short one. Call the moment it happens, the earlier we look, the more of Hawaiian's own inventory is still open.
Our own rule of thumb, not a Hawaiian rule: if your trip continues onward internationally after Honolulu, build in extra connection time at your transfer point. A misconnect there can affect entry-document timing and onward plans on top of the flight itself.
What a person can do that hawaiianairlines.com and the app can't
This is the whole reason to call instead of tapping "rebook" and taking what the screen shows you.
Self-rebooking tools tend to show the most obvious next flight. A person can work through Hawaiian's own interisland and mainland routes to find one that actually fits your plans, not just the first one offered.
Whether a delay is within Hawaiian's own operation or caused by weather, air traffic control, or illness decides if the meal, the hotel, and the discount code or Atmos Rewards choice apply. We know how Hawaiian classifies a disruption and how to ask, so you're not guessing at a kiosk at 11 p.m.
Tell us the time you absolutely must land by, an interisland ferry, a cruise departure, a resort check-in, and we work Hawaiian's available inventory to find a routing that still makes it, not just the "next available" flight the screen defaults to.
Once you clear the 3+ hour or cancellation mark, we'll lay out what the discount code and the Atmos Rewards option actually mean for your next trip, so you're deciding with full information, not guessing under pressure.
Rescheduled and never told?
Silent schedule changes are more common than people realize.
Airlines routinely move flights weeks or months ahead, a "schedule change", and the notification email doesn't always land. Before you travel, check your trip on hawaiianairlines.com or the Hawaiian app. If Hawaiian moved you to a time that no longer works, that can unlock the same refund rights as a delay or cancellation, but only if you catch it. Give us your confirmation number and we'll check your reservation for a change you were never told about.
Have this ready when you call
Thirty seconds of prep is the difference between the last seat and the next flight.
- Confirmation number, the number and passenger names
- What caused it, if you know, weather, ATC and illness vs. something within Hawaiian's own operation decides the meal, hotel and discount code
- How far you are from home, the 100-mile line decides whether the hotel applies
- Any hard deadline, a cruise, a wedding, or a connection time we route backward from
Call while you're still in line. When a Hawaiian flight cancels, everyone on it starts rebooking at once, and with fewer daily interisland departures than a big mainland hub, the seats that are left go quickly. The phone reaches an agent faster than a crowded gate counter, you can be confirmed on the next departure, and any meal, hotel or discount code you're owed checked, before you'd even reach the front of the queue.
