How United baggage generally works
General guidance. Your exact allowance depends on fare, route and MileagePlus Premier tier.
Most fares include a full-size carry-on plus a personal item. Basic Economy is the catch — on many routes it allows only a personal item that fits under the seat, so confirm yours before you pack a roller bag.
Charged by count and weight on most domestic and shorter international routes; some long-haul and premium cabins include them. Overweight and oversize bags cost more.
MileagePlus Premier status and eligible United co-brand cards can waive checked-bag charges for you and companions on the same reservation.
Pre-paying a checked bag on united.com or in the app is generally cheaper than adding it at the counter — and quicker on the day of travel.
Sports equipment, musical instruments and oversize items usually need advance arrangement and follow specific size and weight rules.
Allowances and excess-bag charges vary by cabin, route and status, and change often. We don't publish bag prices — tell us your ticket and we'll confirm your exact allowance and pre-pay bags for you.

- Liquids follow the cabin 3-1-1 rule
- Confirm Basic Economy — it may be personal item only
Checked baggage
For bigger trips

- Cheaper added in advance than at the counter
- Weight and size limits apply — overweight costs more
- Premier & eligible cards may waive the charge
