United baggage, made simple

What you can bring on United depends on your cabin, route and Premier status — and Basic Economy plays by its own carry-on rules. Here's how to know before you reach the airport.

    How United baggage generally works

General guidance. Your exact allowance depends on fare, route and MileagePlus Premier tier.

    Carry-on and personal item:

Most fares include a full-size carry-on plus a personal item. Basic Economy is the catch — on many routes it allows only a personal item that fits under the seat, so confirm yours before you pack a roller bag.

    Checked bags:

Charged by count and weight on most domestic and shorter international routes; some long-haul and premium cabins include them. Overweight and oversize bags cost more.

    Premier and card perks:

MileagePlus Premier status and eligible United co-brand cards can waive checked-bag charges for you and companions on the same reservation.

    Add bags before the airport:

Pre-paying a checked bag on united.com or in the app is generally cheaper than adding it at the counter — and quicker on the day of travel.

    Special and oversize items:

Sports equipment, musical instruments and oversize items usually need advance arrangement and follow specific size and weight rules.

Allowances and excess-bag charges vary by cabin, route and status, and change often. We don't publish bag prices — tell us your ticket and we'll confirm your exact allowance and pre-pay bags for you.

Carry-on only vs. checking a bag

Pick the right approach before you get to the airport.

    Carry-on + personal item

    Fastest, skip bag drop

    • Must fit the sizer and overhead bin
    • Skips the check-in bag queue
    • Liquids follow the cabin 3-1-1 rule
    • Confirm Basic Economy — it may be personal item only

    Checked baggage

    For bigger trips

    • Charged by count and weight on most domestic routes
    • Cheaper added in advance than at the counter
    • Weight and size limits apply — overweight costs more
    • Premier & eligible cards may waive the charge

    Frequently asked

Does my United fare include a checked bag?+
On most domestic routes checked bags are charged separately, but Premier status, eligible United cards, and many long-haul/premium fares include them. Give us your confirmation number and we'll tell you precisely what's included.
    Can I bring a carry-on on Basic Economy?+
This is where United differs from some airlines — on many routes Basic Economy allows only a personal item under the seat, not a full-size carry-on. Some routes are exempt. Tell us your route and we'll confirm exactly what you can bring.
How do I use my Premier or card free-bag benefit?+
Make sure your MileagePlus number and the eligible card are on the reservation, and the benefit typically applies automatically for you and companions on the same booking. We can add your number so it isn't missed.
What about a stroller, sports gear or an instrument?+
These are usually accepted with specific rules and often advance arrangement. Tell us what you're carrying and we'll set it up so nothing is refused at the gate.
