    How United refunds generally work

Whether you get cash back usually comes down to two things: your fare, and who caused the change.

    Refundable vs. nonrefundable fare:

Refundable tickets return to your original payment; most published United fares are nonrefundable and instead become future flight credit when you cancel by choice.

    Who cancelled matters most:

If United cancels or significantly reschedules your flight, a refund to your original form of payment is generally available — no matter how inexpensive the fare was.

    The 24-hour flexible booking rule:

Cancel within 24 hours of purchase — provided you booked at least a week before departure — and United refunds the fare in full to your original payment. It covers every fare type sold in the US.

Future flight credit instead of cash:

Outside 24 hours, cancelling an eligible nonrefundable ticket usually leaves you with future flight credit rather than money. Basic Economy generally holds no value once cancelled. Credits expire and carry conditions.

    How long it takes:

Refunds to a card usually take one or more billing cycles to post. Filing the request correctly the first time is the fastest route — that's where we come in.

Eligibility depends on your fare rules, route and the reason for the refund. We never quote refund amounts because yours depends on your ticket — an agent confirms what you're owed before anything is filed.

Will it be cash, credit, or nothing?

The two questions that decide almost every United refund.

    Cash refund is likely when…

    Best case

    • United cancelled or significantly rescheduled
    • You hold a refundable fare
    • You cancel within the 24-hour window (booked a week+ ahead)
    • A refund goes to your original payment

Credit or nothing is likely when…

    Nonrefundable

    • You cancel an eligible nonrefundable fare by choice
    • Value returns as future flight credit, not cash
    • Basic Economy typically holds no value
    • Credits carry expiry dates and conditions

Airline-caused disruption changes everything. Even a nonrefundable United ticket can qualify for a cash refund when United cancels or heavily delays the flight — don't assume you're stuck with future flight credit. Call us and we'll check what you're actually owed.

    Frequently asked

United cancelled my flight — am I entitled to cash?+
Generally yes. When United cancels or makes a significant schedule change, a refund to your original form of payment is usually available even on a nonrefundable fare. Call us with your confirmation number and we'll start it.
    I have a nonrefundable ticket. Any options?+
If you're cancelling by choice outside 24 hours, cash is unlikely, but an eligible ticket's value usually survives as future flight credit. Basic Economy typically retains no value. Airline-caused disruptions can still qualify for a cash refund — let us check your ticket.
    How does United's 24-hour rule work?+
Cancel any United fare within 24 hours of purchase and you get a full refund to your original payment — as long as you booked at least a week before departure. It's strict on timing, so act fast; we can do it for you.
Do you charge to request a refund?+
Yes — our service fee covers handling the request and is quoted up front. The refund itself comes from United. You're always free to file it yourself at united.com at no cost.
