    Nonstop only for ages 5 to 12, Hawaiian's strictest rule

    The rule that catches families off guard most often.

    No connections, none, at this age:

    If your child is 5 to 12, Junior Jetsetters only covers a nonstop flight. A one-stop itinerary, even on the same aircraft with the same flight number, is not an option Hawaiian offers for this age band.

    Interisland and transpacific routes both apply:

    The nonstop rule holds whether you're booking an interisland hop or a mainland route, Honolulu to Los Angeles, San Francisco or Seattle. If the only schedule available requires a connection, that trip isn't bookable for a 5 to 12-year-old traveling alone.

    Turning 13 changes the picture:

Connections are permitted, including a routing through Honolulu on an interisland-to-mainland trip. What doesn't change with age is the overnight-connection rule: Hawaiian does not offer Junior Jetsetters, at any age from 5 to 17, on an itinerary where the connection requires an overnight stay. If a schedule only works with an overnight layover, that itinerary is off the table regardless of how old the child is.

    A domestic example: Honolulu to Los Angeles, nonstop

    The rules make more sense once you see them applied to a real trip.

    Say a 10-year-old is flying alone from Honolulu to Los Angeles to visit a grandparent over a school break. Because she's 10, Junior Jetsetters is required, and because Hawaiian only allows this age group to fly nonstop, the trip only works if there's a genuine nonstop flight between those two cities on the day she needs to travel, there is, so the booking goes ahead as a single-fee, single-leg itinerary. Now change one detail: the same 10-year-old needs to fly from Kona to Seattle on a date when the only available Hawaiian schedule connects through Honolulu. That itinerary is not bookable for her age band at all, not because of a fee or a paperwork gap, but because Hawaiian's nonstop rule for ages 5 to 12 rules it out completely. A 15-year-old on that same Kona to Seattle routing could use Junior Jetsetters with the Honolulu connection, as long as it isn't an overnight layover.
