LATAM baggage, made simple

On LATAM, your allowance climbs with your fare, and there's one catch that trips people up: Economy Basic does not include a carry-on. Here's the personal item every fare gets, the carry-on weights, and the checked-bag limits, so you know what you've got before you reach the airport.

    How LATAM baggage generally works

General guidance. Your exact allowance depends on your fare, cabin, route and LATAM Pass status.

Every fare gets a personal item:

A personal item up to 10 kg, roughly 45 x 35 x 20 cm, is included on all fares and goes under the seat in front of you. That's the one bag Economy Basic always includes.

The carry-on catch on Economy Basic:

The overhead carry-on, up to 12 kg in Economy or 16 kg in Premium at about 55 x 35 x 25 cm, is included from Economy Light upward but not on Economy Basic. On Basic you can buy the carry-on separately, generally up to about six hours before departure.

Checked bags climb with the fare:

A standard checked bag is up to 23 kg and 158 linear cm. Whether one is included depends on your fare and cabin, and allowances differ between domestic South American flights and long-haul international routes.

    Overweight and oversize have ceilings:

Most routes accept a checked bag up to a 45 kg ceiling, but on itineraries via Argentina, Aruba, Cuba, Europe, Oceania, South Africa or Venezuela, and on certain partner connections, the ceiling drops to 32 kg. You can check up to ten pieces per passenger.

    Status and card perks:

Higher LATAM Pass tiers and eligible cards can add a checked-bag allowance for you and companions on the same reservation.

Allowances and excess-bag charges vary by fare, cabin, route and status, and change often. We don't publish bag prices, tell us your ticket and we'll confirm your exact allowance and pre-pay bags for you, including the carry-on if you're on Basic. LATAM's own tools at latam.com are always free.

Carry-on only vs. checking a bag

Pick the right approach before you get to the airport.

    Personal item + carry-on

    Fastest, skip bag drop

    • Personal item is included on every fare
    • Carry-on is included from Economy Light up, not on Basic
    • Must fit the sizer and overhead bin
    • Liquids follow the cabin rules

    Checked baggage

    For bigger trips

    • Up to 23 kg and 158 linear cm per standard bag
    • Up to ten pieces per passenger
    • Cheaper added in advance than at the counter
    • Overweight ceiling is 45 kg, or 32 kg via certain countries

On Economy Basic? Sort the carry-on before you fly. Basic includes only the under-seat personal item, so an overhead carry-on must be added separately, generally up to about six hours before departure and cheaper than at the gate. Call us and we'll add it to your booking.

    Frequently asked

Does Economy Basic include a carry-on on LATAM?+
No, and this is the one that surprises people. Every fare includes a personal item up to about 10 kg, but the overhead carry-on is included only from Economy Light upward. On Basic you'd add the carry-on separately, generally up to about six hours before departure. Tell us your fare and we'll sort it before the airport.
How heavy can my carry-on and checked bag be?+
The carry-on runs up to 12 kg in Economy and 16 kg in Premium; a standard checked bag is up to 23 kg and 158 linear cm. Overweight bags cost more and have a ceiling, 45 kg on most routes, 32 kg via certain countries and partners. Give us your route and we'll confirm your exact limits.
How do I use my LATAM Pass bag benefit?+
Make sure your LATAM Pass number is on the reservation, and any extra allowance from your tier or an eligible card typically applies for you and companions on the same booking. We can add your number so it isn't missed.
What about a stroller, sports gear or an instrument?+
These are usually accepted under specific size and weight rules and often need advance arrangement, especially on international connections through Santiago or São Paulo. Tell us what you're carrying and we'll set it up so it isn't refused.
