How LATAM baggage generally works
General guidance. Your exact allowance depends on your fare, cabin, route and LATAM Pass status.
A personal item up to 10 kg, roughly 45 x 35 x 20 cm, is included on all fares and goes under the seat in front of you. That's the one bag Economy Basic always includes.
The overhead carry-on, up to 12 kg in Economy or 16 kg in Premium at about 55 x 35 x 25 cm, is included from Economy Light upward but not on Economy Basic. On Basic you can buy the carry-on separately, generally up to about six hours before departure.
A standard checked bag is up to 23 kg and 158 linear cm. Whether one is included depends on your fare and cabin, and allowances differ between domestic South American flights and long-haul international routes.
Most routes accept a checked bag up to a 45 kg ceiling, but on itineraries via Argentina, Aruba, Cuba, Europe, Oceania, South Africa or Venezuela, and on certain partner connections, the ceiling drops to 32 kg. You can check up to ten pieces per passenger.
Higher LATAM Pass tiers and eligible cards can add a checked-bag allowance for you and companions on the same reservation.
Allowances and excess-bag charges vary by fare, cabin, route and status, and change often. We don't publish bag prices, tell us your ticket and we'll confirm your exact allowance and pre-pay bags for you, including the carry-on if you're on Basic. LATAM's own tools at latam.com are always free.
LATAM baggage by fare, at a glance
General rules, your exact allowance depends on fare, cabin, route and LATAM Pass status.
Carry-on only vs. checking a bag
Pick the right approach before you get to the airport.
Personal item + carry-on
Fastest, skip bag drop
- Personal item is included on every fare
- Carry-on is included from Economy Light up, not on Basic
- Must fit the sizer and overhead bin
- Liquids follow the cabin rules
Checked baggage
For bigger trips
- Up to 23 kg and 158 linear cm per standard bag
- Up to ten pieces per passenger
- Cheaper added in advance than at the counter
- Overweight ceiling is 45 kg, or 32 kg via certain countries
On Economy Basic? Sort the carry-on before you fly. Basic includes only the under-seat personal item, so an overhead carry-on must be added separately, generally up to about six hours before departure and cheaper than at the gate. Call us and we'll add it to your booking.
