What Sun Country's Customer Service Plan actually provides
Sun Country's own commitment, in plain English, separate from the federal DOT rule below.
You're rebooked on Sun Country's next available flight at no cost. If the cause was within Sun Country's control, that's the whole rebooking story. If it was weather or air traffic control, the same rebooking applies, but without the meal or hotel help below, and a refund only opens up if the delay passes 6 hours and you decide not to travel instead.
Once a delay within Sun Country's own control passes about 4 hours, Sun Country provides a meal voucher. This does not apply to weather or air-traffic-control delays.
Sun Country provides a hotel when one is available. If none is available, it reimburses reasonable overnight expenses, keep your itemized receipts, plus reasonable ground transportation. None of this applies if the delay happens to be sitting in your home or originating city, even overnight.
On weather or air-traffic-control delays, Sun Country's own refund becomes available once the delay exceeds 6 hours and you decline the rebooking it offers. Below that mark, or if you accept the rebooking, no separate refund applies from Sun Country's own plan.
Sun Country provides food and water within about 2 hours of the aircraft leaving the gate or landing, along with working lavatories and medical help if it's needed. Its plan doesn't set its own limit for how long you can be held before deplaning is required, that limit comes from the separate federal DOT tarmac rule.
Weather, air traffic control, and any other cause outside Sun Country's own operation aren't eligible for the meal voucher or hotel, no matter how long the delay runs. Rebooking still happens regardless of cause.
DOT vs. Sun Country, two things, don't confuse them
One is federal law; the other is Sun Country's own Customer Service Plan. People mix them up and expect the wrong thing.
US DOT, the law
Ticket price
- A significant change you decline → automatic refund of the ticket price to your original payment
- Verified thresholds: 3+ hrs domestic, 6+ hrs international, a changed airport, added connections or a downgrade
- Applies regardless of cause. Sun Country cannot force you into a voucher instead
- Does NOT require hotels, meals or compensation for lost time
Sun Country's Customer Service Plan
Rebooking, meal/hotel on controllable delays, refund past 6 hrs on weather/ATC
- Rebooking on the next available flight, no set rebooking window published
- Controllable delay past 4 hrs → meal voucher; overnight → hotel or reimbursement
- Weather/ATC delay past 6 hrs, declined → Sun Country's own refund, separate from DOT's
- No lodging if the delay sits in your home or originating city, even overnight
Keep them separate in your head: Sun Country's meal voucher, hotel and its own weather/ATC refund all come from its Customer Service Plan, and most of that only applies when the cause is within Sun Country's control. The DOT refund fires whenever YOU decline a significant change, regardless of who caused it, and it's cash to your ticket price only, never a hotel, meal or lost-time compensation. You can compare airline plans at flightrights.gov, and these DOT rules are also under active revision, so we confirm what's current when you call.
Seasonal and limited-frequency routes, the real risk
This is the part a generic delay guide won't tell you, and it's the whole reason Sun Country is different from a daily network airline.
A lot of Sun Country's flying isn't a year-round, multiple-times-a-day operation the way it is on a legacy network carrier. Domestic leisure routes to warm-weather markets, and seasonal routes into the Caribbean and Mexico, often run just a few days a week, or only during part of the year. That's fine when everything goes to plan. It becomes the whole problem when a flight cancels: the next available seat on that exact routing might not exist until the next scheduled operating day, which can be days out rather than hours.
This cuts both ways, domestic and international. A traveler headed from the Twin Cities to a domestic beach market on a Sun Country-only route can be just as stuck as one headed onward to a resort destination in Mexico or the Caribbean, waiting on the same thin schedule. If your trip continues internationally past your Sun Country flight, a stranding of a day or more can also affect connecting flights, hotel or resort check-in windows, and any onward document timing, on top of the flight itself.
Our own guidance, not a Sun Country rule: the moment a seasonal or low-frequency Sun Country flight cancels, ask about every option at once, a later seat on the same route, a different routing, or a refund, rather than assuming the airline's first offer is the only path. The earlier we look, the more of Sun Country's own inventory, and any workable alternative, is still open.
What a person can do that suncountry.com and the app can't
This is the whole reason to call instead of tapping "rebook" and taking what the screen shows you.
On a route that flies only a few days a week, the self-service tool can only offer what's on that route's own limited schedule. A person can look at whether a different routing gets you there sooner, not just the next departure on the same thin schedule.
Whether a delay is within Sun Country's own operation or caused by weather or air traffic control decides if the meal voucher and hotel apply, and when the weather/ATC refund clock starts. We know how to ask, so you're not guessing at a counter.
Tell us the time you absolutely must land by, a resort check-in, a cruise, a connecting flight, and we work Sun Country's available inventory, and reasonable alternatives, to find something that still makes it.
Once you clear the thresholds above, declining for a refund can beat waiting days for the next seat on a thin route. We'll lay out both so you're deciding with full information.
Rescheduled and never told?
Silent schedule changes are more common than people realize, especially on seasonal routes.
Airlines routinely move flights weeks or months ahead, a "schedule change", and the notification email doesn't always land, or lands in a spam folder during the off-season when you're not checking your inbox for a trip that's still months out. Before you travel, check your trip on suncountry.com or the Sun Country app. If Sun Country moved you to a time that no longer works, or dropped your route's frequency, that can unlock the same refund rights as a delay or cancellation, but only if you catch it. Give us your confirmation number and we'll check your reservation for a change you were never told about.
Have this ready when you call
Thirty seconds of prep is the difference between the last seat and a days-long wait.
- Confirmation number, the number and passenger names
- What caused it, if you know, weather/ATC vs. something within Sun Country's own operation decides the meal and hotel coverage
- How often your route flies, daily, a few days a week, or seasonal, so we know how thin the alternatives are
- Any hard deadline, a resort check-in, a cruise, a connecting flight we route backward from
Call while you're still at the gate. On a route Sun Country flies only a few days a week, every seat on the next scheduled departure matters, and the phone reaches an agent who can check that flight, a different routing, and your refund rights, all at once, before you'd even reach the front of a counter line.
