In the cabin: what Sun Country actually accepts
Sun Country's own rules, in plain English. Confirm the current details at suncountry.com.
Sun Country's in-cabin pet program is limited to small cats and dogs travelling in an airline-approved carrier that fits under the seat in front of you. If your pet doesn't fit under the seat, Sun Country doesn't have a way to fly it, there's no larger-carrier fee and no bulk allowance.
Sun Country wants a pet arranged on your booking ahead of travel day. It's cheaper that way, and it's the only way to be certain there's still a spot, the airline caps how many pets it will carry on a given flight.
Each passenger travelling with a pet may bring one. If your household is travelling with more than one animal, each needs its own ticketed traveler and its own arranged spot.
Domestic only, the restriction that trips people up
This is the single biggest way a Sun Country pet trip falls apart before it starts.
If any leg of your trip crosses an international border, Sun Country's pet program doesn't apply to it, full stop.
These are domestic US destinations for most travel purposes, but Sun Country carves all three out of its pet program specifically. Flying to Anchorage, San Juan, or St. Thomas with a cat or dog isn't an option on Sun Country, even though the rest of the trip looks like an ordinary domestic booking.
If your itinerary includes an international leg, Alaska, Puerto Rico, or the US Virgin Islands, decide on another airline or a ground-transport option well before your travel date, this isn't something that gets resolved at the airport.
Space is capped per flight, book early
Easy to assume there's always room. There isn't.
Sun Country limits the total number of pets it will carry on any single flight, on top of the one-pet-per-traveler rule. That combination means pet space behaves like a limited inventory, not a guaranteed add-on, it can and does sell out, especially on routes that are already popular with pet owners. Arranging your pet's spot as early as possible, ideally when you first book your seat, is the only reliable way to avoid finding out at the gate that the flight is already full of pets.
The pet fee, $75 per direction
One of the few numbers Sun Country puts in writing. Confirm it hasn't changed before you book.
Sun Country charges $75 per direction for an in-cabin pet, booked in advance. That's the price for arranging your pet's spot ahead of travel day, not a walk-up rate. Fees like this change, so treat that figure as a starting point, confirm the current amount at suncountry.com, or call us and we'll verify it before anything is booked.
If you skip arranging it in advance and try to add your pet at the airport instead, expect to pay more than the advance price, and there's no guarantee a spot is even still available given the per-flight cap. Advance booking is cheaper and safer on both counts.
No checked or cargo pets, for anyone
Cabin is the only Sun Country pet option, regardless of size.
Sun Country doesn't operate a checked-baggage or cargo-pet program. There's no "check your dog like a bag" counter option and no cargo hold alternative for a pet too large for the cabin. If your cat or dog can't travel in an approved carrier under the seat, on an eligible domestic route, Sun Country isn't a way to fly it, not at the counter, not for any fee.
Service animals are different
Don't assume the pet rules above apply.
Sun Country treats a trained service animal as separate from a pet. The airline accepts trained service dogs only, not emotional support animals and not animals still in training, and the request goes through a dedicated process, the Open Doors Organization (ODO) portal, rather than the ordinary pet booking flow. There's no charge for a qualifying service dog, and Sun Country asks that the dog be at least a few months old. If you're travelling with a service animal, tell us your situation up front and we'll route it correctly instead of treating it like a standard pet booking.
Before you book, the checklist
A few minutes now avoids a pet turned away at the gate.
- Does your route stay domestic? No pets on international itineraries, or to and from Alaska, Puerto Rico, or the US Virgin Islands
- Is your pet a small cat or dog? It needs to fit in an approved carrier under the seat, there's no larger option
- Arranged your pet's spot in advance? Space is capped per flight and sells out, and it's cheaper booked ahead
- Traveling with more than one pet? Each needs its own ticketed traveler, it's one pet per person
- Budgeted for the pet fee? $75 per direction booked ahead, confirm the current amount at suncountry.com
Don't assume Alaska, Puerto Rico, or the US Virgin Islands counts as domestic for pets. Sun Country excludes all three from its pet program alongside every international itinerary, even though they're otherwise ordinary domestic destinations. And remember, space per flight is capped and does sell out, so arranging your pet's spot early beats waiting and paying more at the airport. Tell us your pet, your route, and your dates, and we'll confirm what's possible before you book anything.
