What Allegiant provides when the cause is within its control
Allegiant's own care, in plain English, separate from the federal DOT rule below.
You're rebooked on Allegiant's next available flight. On a route with only a few weekly frequencies, that flight may not be the same day, or even the same week, which is exactly why calling the moment it happens matters more here than on an airline with dozens of daily departures between the same two cities.
If the disruption is within Allegiant's control, not weather or air traffic control, and it runs about three hours or more, Allegiant provides a meal. That protection is tied to the cause, so the same three-hour wait caused by weather won't carry the same meal coverage.
If Allegiant's own operation causes an overnight delay or cancellation, its plan can include hotel support or reimbursement. As with the meal, this depends on the cause being within Allegiant's control, an overnight caused by weather or air traffic generally does not carry the same support.
On a long tarmac delay, Allegiant provides snacks and water within about two hours. Past the federal tarmac limits, three hours on a domestic flight, four hours on an international one, the airline's full contingency plan applies, which can include the option to deplane.
Weather, air traffic control, and any other cause outside Allegiant's control are not eligible for the meal or hotel support described above. You're still rebooked on the next available flight regardless of cause, and your DOT refund right below still applies too.
DOT vs. Allegiant, two different things, don't confuse them
One is federal law. The other is Allegiant's own care during a disruption. Mixing them up sets the wrong expectation.
US DOT, the law
Ticket price only
- Allegiant cancels or makes a significant change and you decline the alternative → automatic refund of the ticket price to your original payment
- Applies regardless of cause, weather, air traffic control, or anything else
- Allegiant cannot force you into a voucher instead of the refund if you decline
- Does NOT require a hotel, a meal, or compensation for lost time
Allegiant's own care
Rebooking, plus meal/hotel when it's their fault
- Rebooking on the next available flight, which on a thin route can mean days, not hours
- Controllable delay of about 3+ hrs → a meal; a controllable overnight → hotel support or reimbursement
- Tarmac delay: snacks/water within about 2 hours, full plan past the federal 3/4-hour limits
- Weather/ATC excluded from the meal and hotel support
Keep them separate in your head: the meal and hotel support come from Allegiant's own care, and only apply when the cause was within Allegiant's control. The DOT refund fires whenever YOU decline a significant change or cancellation, regardless of who caused it, and it's cash to your ticket price only, never a hotel or a meal. You can compare airline plans at flightrights.gov, and these DOT rules are also under active revision, so we confirm what's current when you call.
Why a cancellation here isn't like one on a big network airline
The point-to-point model, and what it means for a domestic trip.
Allegiant's network is built point to point between smaller regional airports and leisure destinations, often with only a few scheduled departures a week on a given route, rather than the dozens of daily flights a big network carrier runs between major hubs. Say a family books a Friday-to-Monday getaway out of a smaller regional airport and the outbound flight cancels. On a hub-and-spoke airline, there's often another routing through a connecting city within a few hours. On Allegiant, if that route only operates a few days a week, the next scheduled departure on that exact city pair might not be until later that week.
That's the reason the advice on this page keeps repeating itself: call immediately, because there's no backup bank of connecting flights to fall back on, and understand your DOT refund right, because sometimes declining the wait and booking a different way home is the faster path. Neither one fixes the underlying schedule, but knowing both means you're deciding with your eyes open instead of guessing at the counter.
What a person can do that allegiantair.com and the app can't
This is the whole reason to call instead of tapping "rebook" and taking whatever the screen shows you.
Self-rebooking tools tend to surface the most obvious next flight. A person can look across nearby dates on the same route, and confirm whether anything else realistically fits your plans, rather than the single option the app defaults to.
Whether a delay was within Allegiant's own control decides if the meal and hotel support apply. We know how to ask and what to listen for, so you're not guessing at a counter late at night.
Once Allegiant cancels or makes a significant change, declining for a full ticket-price refund and booking a different way to get there can beat waiting days for the next seat on that route. We'll lay out both so the decision is yours, fully informed.
Tell us the time you absolutely must arrive by, a cruise departure, a wedding, an event, and we'll work Allegiant's available inventory, and other realistic options if there aren't any, to find something that still makes it.
Rescheduled and never told?
Silent schedule changes are more common than people realize, and matter even more on a thin route.
Airlines routinely move flights weeks or months ahead of departure, a "schedule change", and the notification email doesn't always land, or gets missed among the rest of your inbox. Before you travel, check your trip on allegiantair.com or in the Allegiant app. If Allegiant moved you to a time that no longer works, that can unlock the same refund rights as a delay or cancellation, but only if you catch it, and on a route with limited weekly frequencies, there may not be an easy same-day alternative once you do. Give us your confirmation number and we'll check your reservation for a change you were never told about.
Have this ready when you call
Thirty seconds of prep is the difference between the last seat on the next flight and a multi-day wait.
- Confirmation number, the number and passenger names
- What caused it, if you know, weather/ATC versus something within Allegiant's own control decides the meal and hotel support
- Wait or refund, whether you'd rather hold for the next Allegiant flight or decline for the DOT ticket-price refund
- Any hard deadline, a cruise, wedding, or event we should route backward from
Call while you're still at the gate. On a route with only a few weekly Allegiant departures, the small number of open seats on the next flight goes fast once everyone from your cancelled flight starts calling at once. Reaching an agent by phone can get you confirmed on whatever is actually available, and your meal, hotel, or DOT refund rights checked, before you'd even reach the front of a counter line.
