Why families get split up, and how to avoid it
The gotcha that catches people off guard at the gate.
Allegiant's model is simple, but the seat-selection fee is where it bites travel parties. Every seat is assigned, that part's guaranteed. What isn't guaranteed is who sits next to whom. If your whole party skips paying for seat selection, Allegiant doesn't hold you together as a block at check-in, it fills open seats individually as boarding passes are issued. On a flight that's nearly full, a couple with a child can end up scattered three rows apart, discovering it only when they check in, sometimes as late as the airport kiosk or the gate. That's a hard moment to fix once you're standing there, other passengers are already seated, and rearranging on the spot depends entirely on whether anyone's willing to move. The fix is upstream, not at the gate: pay to select seats for everyone in your party when you book, or as soon after as you can while seats remain. It doesn't need to be an Allegiant Extra or exit-row upgrade, a standard paid seat selection is enough to guarantee your family is actually seated together instead of hoping the check-in assignment happens to work out.
