Frontier baggage, your base fare gets a personal item, not a carry-on

Frontier prices baggage apart from the seat, and the base fare is stricter than most flyers expect: one personal item rides free, but a roller bag doesn't come with it unless you buy one or hold a bundle. Here's exactly what each fare includes, what a checked bag needs to weigh, and how to add bags before the airport marks them up.

First question: are you on the unbundled base fare, or a bundle / Elite Gold and above?

    Base fare, no bundle

You get one personal item, free, that's it. A carry-on and any checked bag are paid add-ons you buy separately, cheapest when you buy them well before departure.

Economy / Premium / Business bundle, or Elite Gold+

A carry-on is included, and the Business bundle also includes two checked bags. Elite Platinum gets one included checked bag, Elite Diamond gets two.

Personal item (18 x 14 x 8 in) free on every fare Base fare = personal item only, a carry-on is NOT included, ever Carry-on (24 x 16 x 10 in) included only in a bundle or Elite Gold+ Checked bag up to 40 lb (50 lb Business bundle); max 62 linear inches Bag prices are dynamic and rise the closer you get to departure Over 100 lb or over 110 linear inches, refused outright, not just charged

Base Frontier fare = personal item only.

No carry-on rides along with it, that's the single most common surprise at the Frontier gate, and it runs backwards from how most legacy carriers price a ticket. A carry-on (24 x 16 x 10 in) has to be bought separately, or it comes included the moment you're on an Economy, Premium or Business bundle, or hold Elite Gold status and above.
Buy bags before the airport. Frontier's prices climb the longer you wait
    At booking

The cheapest point to add a carry-on or checked bag, full stop. Run your route through Frontier's own Bag Price Checker, or give us your itinerary and we'll add bags to the reservation right away.

    Anytime before departure, still online

Prices step up the closer you get to your flight, but adding a bag online, even a day out, still beats paying at the airport.

    At the counter or gate

The most expensive point of all, and where overweight (41 to 50 lb, 51 to 99.99 lb) and oversize (63 to 110 linear in) surcharges apply. Past 100 lb or 110 linear inches, the bag isn't priced higher, it's refused.

    How Frontier baggage actually works

The essentials in plain language. Your exact allowance depends on your fare, bundle and status.

A personal item comes with every fare:

Every Frontier ticket, including the base fare, includes one personal item, up to 18 x 14 x 8 in, at no charge. It has to fit under the seat in front of you; Frontier measures and enforces this at the gate.

The base fare does NOT include a carry-on:

This is the fact that catches people out. A carry-on, up to 24 x 16 x 10 in, is not part of Frontier's base fare. You either buy it as an add-on or it comes included the moment you're on an Economy, Premium or Business bundle, or hold Elite Gold status or above.

Checked bags follow their own weight and size rule:

A standard checked bag can weigh up to 40 lb, or up to 50 lb if it's part of the Business bundle, and can't exceed 62 linear inches (length + width + height combined). Checked bags aren't included by default, the Business bundle includes two, Elite Platinum includes one, and Elite Diamond includes two.

Bag prices move, they're not a fixed table:

Frontier prices carry-ons and checked bags through its own Bag Price Checker, and the amount depends on your route, travel date and how far ahead you buy. Buying online at booking is consistently the cheapest point; the airport is the most expensive. We don't quote a flat number here because it changes by itinerary, tell us your trip and we'll confirm the current price.

Overweight, oversize, and the hard cutoff:

A checked bag between 41 to 50 lb, or 51 to 99.99 lb, carries an extra overweight charge; one measuring 63 to 110 linear inches carries an oversize charge. Past 100 lb or past 110 linear inches, Frontier doesn't just charge more, it won't check the bag at all.

We never publish Frontier's bag prices because they're dynamic and change by route, date and how far ahead you buy, an agent confirms the current amount for your exact itinerary and can add bags to your booking before the price climbs.

Base fare vs. bundle, which actually costs less

Pick before you book, not at the gate.

    Base fare, personal item only

    Cheapest upfront

    • Lowest sticker price if you truly pack into one under-seat bag
    • No carry-on included, add one and the "cheap" fare can cost more than a bundle
    • Bag prices rise every day you wait to buy one

    Bundle or Elite Gold+

Better if you're checking or carrying on

    • Carry-on already included, no add-on to remember
    • Business bundle adds two checked bags on top
    • One price at booking instead of a rising à la carte charge

Add bags before you get to the airport, every single time. Frontier runs bag prices through its own Bag Price Checker, and they climb as departure gets closer, peaking at the counter and gate. Prepaying online, or letting us add bags to your booking early, is the simplest way to keep a low base fare actually low.

    Frequently asked

    Does Frontier's base fare include a carry-on bag?+
No. The base fare includes one personal item only, a carry-on is not part of it and has to be purchased separately or included in an Economy, Premium or Business bundle, or by holding Elite Gold status or above. It's the opposite of most legacy carriers and the single biggest gate surprise on Frontier. Tell us your fare and we'll confirm exactly what you already have.
What are Frontier's personal item and carry-on size limits?+
The personal item is up to 18 x 14 x 8 in and must fit under the seat in front of you, it's included free on every fare. A carry-on is up to 24 x 16 x 10 in; it's only included in a bundle or with Elite Gold status and above, otherwise it's a paid add-on.
How much does a Frontier checked or carry-on bag cost?+
Frontier prices bags dynamically through its own Bag Price Checker, the amount depends on your route, travel date and how far ahead you buy, and it rises the closer you get to departure, with the airport counter and gate the most expensive point of all. We don't publish a flat number because it moves; tell us your itinerary and we'll confirm the current price and add bags before it climbs.
What's the weight limit for a Frontier checked bag?+
A standard checked bag can weigh up to 40 lb (up to 50 lb if it's part of the Business bundle) and must not exceed 62 linear inches (length + width + height). Go over that and you're into overweight or oversize charges, go past 100 lb or 110 linear inches and the bag is refused outright, not just charged more.
Does a Frontier bundle include baggage?+
Yes. The Economy, Premium and Business bundles all include a carry-on, and the Business bundle adds two checked bags (Elite Platinum gets one checked bag, Elite Diamond gets two, on top of the carry-on that comes with Elite Gold and above). If you're bringing more than a personal item, a bundle is often worth pricing against paying per bag.
